The spiritual legacy of past generations
of the parish is what we enjoy today. We are purely its guardians,
with responsibility for ensuring that we hand it on in the best possible
condition. |

|
|
| |
Against this background, in 1995 and
under the enthusiastic leadership of Fr. Tony Ford, the Parish Council
turned its attention to the needs of the parish for the coming 25
years, i.e to the year 2020. For the Council, membership of the parish
comprised 'All who live within the boundaries who wish to be associated
with it, whether they be Catholic or not'. |

| |
In June 1996 it was decided to give all
those attending OLI church the chance to comment on their vision of
the future. 722 questionnaires were completed over one weekend. This
produced over 8000 answers, half about the person completing the questionnaire
and half on their views of the parish. A report was published based
on the comments and about 500 copies were circulated. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
| In addition, a complete listing was made of
every one of the comments. Both are available to view in the
presbytery. Two hundred people attended a parish meeting on
Pentecost Sunday, 1997, at which the report was discussed and
groups were established to pursue selected avenues of suggested
need. |
| |
| A number of subsequent developments have been
influenced by the report, although, as the Council suggested,
no dramatic outcome was to be expected. Why should it? At the
time there were fifty groups operating in the parish. What a
wealth of work for Jesus Christ! |
| |
| What the report did was, first, to confirm
this wealth and, second, to give a lead to, and better understanding
of, future needs, needs centred on the two Commandments 'You
must love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul and
with all your mind' and 'You must love your neighbour as yourself.' |
