this is an edited version of the Parish News

An amazing number of people have turned out to venerate the relics of St Theresa of Lisieux. Despite our local difficulties concerning our coach to Aylesford, parishioners have taken the opportunity to go up to Westminster and the Carmelite Church in Kensington to join the crowds queuing to pray before the casket.  Hopefully it will make a difference to their lives because they have had the opportunity to reflect on the life of a young woman who spent nine years of her life in an enclosed order of Carmelites.  She didn’t seem to have done any great deeds. Writing to Fr Roulland shortly before her death she says. “I really count on not remaining inactive in heaven.  My desire is to work still for the Church and for souls.  I am asking God for this and I am certain he will answer me.”  On 17th July 1897 She said  “ I feel especially that my mission is about to begin, my mission of making God loved as I love Him, of giving my little way to souls.  If God answers my desires, my heaven will be spent on earth until the end of the world. Yes, I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth.”   She has been made patroness of the Missions.

It is good to reflect on St Theresa today, World Mission Sunday, when the theme is “Reach out with love”.  She reminds us that the purpose of the Church is to obey Jesus’ command to go out and make disciples of all nations.  Pope Benedict in his message for Mission Sunday this year says, “I wish to confirm once more that the task of evangelising all people constitutes the essential mission of the Church”.  This is our number one priority as a parish and as individuals.  How do we do this?  The Pope uses an interesting phrase.  He says we must ‘infect’ all peoples with hope.  It is the way we love, the way we live and our priority of loving God who first loved us.  This is what gives hope today.  People are encouraged by those who show a great love of life and who are able to touch their spirit by the way they approach the adversities and difficulties of life.  We are only able to do this because we put Christ at the centre of our life.   He is the one who is able to love others through us.  We are only an instrument of that love.

Today let us recommit ourselves to this task, to reach out in love and infect others with hope.

Dear Lord I offer you my life today. I wish you to use it as you will.  Give me the courage and faith to trust you at all times. In my darkness be my light.  In my sadness be my joy.  May I have a sense of your presence that I may live a life that shines with hope.  May I be an instrument of your love, reaching out to all I meet.  St Theresa of the Child Jesus, pray for me.

Fr Anthony

The Parish Lenten Project (PLP)

has been running successfully for nearly 40 years.

The aim of the project is give the parish a charitable focal point during Lent and give everyone (all groups, clubs and societies) in the parish the opportunity to take part in fund raising for third world projects.

We would be grateful if you could start thinking about any overseas charities that could benefit from our support next year.

On Sunday 29th November 2009, we’d like to invite you to attend the next PLP committee meeting and propose charities for us to support in 2010.

Ideally, we like to support charities that have a connection or association with people in the OLI parish or school.

Here is an outline of the criteria that we use to select charities:

1.      Charity or organisation needs to be based in the third world

2.      Direct help – we are looking for small charities/organisations rather than large established charities - no intermediate organisations or government agencies

3.      Christian based

4.      Confidence in the recipient – we need to know that the money will be going directly to the charity

5.      Value for money – small and professionally run charity/organisation in the third or developing world

Organisations that have small overheads – we want to make sure that our money will make a real difference

Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting and propose a charity or organisation.

Plus we’re always looking for new committee members and event organisers so please come along if you want to get involved in the 2010 Lenten project.

If you would like further information about the meeting then please call Justine Manche on 07710 349871.

We look forward to seeing you on the 29th November.
