this is an edited version of the Parish News

The Church is Born

Pentecost is the birthday of the Church, the day the Spirit came to dwell with the apostles and disciples as they prayed as a community in the Upper Room. It was their confirmation, the day they came of age as Christian disciples. Their Christian vocation was given new impetus, their fears of ridicule and persecution overcome and their commitment to spread the Good News compelling.

Strengthened by the Holy Spirit they ventured out into the hostile streets of Jerusalem where they had seen their friend and leader, Jesus, arrested, condemned and crucified just 50 days before.

  It is all too easy for us, with the benefit of 2000 years of Christian history behind us, to imagine it was easy for the apostles to do that.  However, I suspect, Peter needed all the encouragement of the whole Christian community as well as the power of the Spirit that morning to face the teaming crowds in Jerusalem who were there to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

The emphasis in the readings for today is on:

the universality of the Christian message;

the diversity of the gifts of the Spirit freely bestowed on individual believers;

the peace and sense of purpose which were present on that first Pentecost morning, the day the Church was born.

1. The Christian message was understood by all who heard Peter and the other apostles speak, regardless of the where they came from, or which language they spoke, “each of us hears them in our own native language.” (Acts 2 v11, 12).   Christianity is not for the few; it is for everyone.

2.  The gifts of the Holy Spirit are freely given, are varied and rich and unite us as one in the Body of Christ, the Church:  “There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit … Just as a human body, though it is made up of many parts, is a single unit because all these parts make one body.”(Cor. 12 v4 ,12).

3. As Christians our task is the same as that presented to the very first followers of Jesus: “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me so am I sending you.”  (John 20 v21)

The names of all our young people who are being confirmed today decorate the third page.  As with the apostles and early disciples they will be confirmed in their Christian vocation today.  They too will come of age as followers of Jesus, but like Peter and the other apostles they too will need the wholehearted support and encouragement not only of their parents and sponsors but of the whole Christian community here at OLI. We pray that they will have the strength, the commitment and encouragement to live their faith amid the challenges of today.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation

We will be organising a half-day pilgrimage to The Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in West Grinstead, West Sussex, on 5th July 2008 as part of our Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

Part of the Priest’s House dates back to Tudor times and was used as a ‘safe house’ for priests.

There are 3 Priests’ Hides (Priest Holes), and in what used to be the old hay loft, there is a hidden chapel, which is still used today.

The day’s timetable will be as follows:-

12.15pm                Lunch (bring your own picnic) to be eaten in the Pilgrim’s Way– weather permitting
