this is an edited version of the Parish News

In the Gospel of Mark this Sunday, we hear a well-known story. It has given rise to the expression, the widow’s mites, a tiny donation given by someone who can ill-afford to give.

In the Temple there was a place where offerings of money could be made into one of the thirteen trumpet-shaped chests. It was possible to watch people making their offerings and we are told that Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into it. Many of the rich put in a great deal. I imagine their coins made a great noise as they rattled their way down into the various chests, whilst donors made a great show of what they were doing.

Then, quickly and without any show, a poor widow came forward and dropped in two small coins– all that she had– and then slipped silently away. However, her act of sacrifice made a great impression on Jesus, so much so that he called his disciples to him to point out the immense difference between what the rich had done and what the poor widow had done: the rich had given only a portion of their wealth (perhaps only their ready cash), whereas the widow had given all that she had possessed, all that she had to live on.

The temple treasury did not gain much by the widow’s offering but she had gained the acknowledgement and admiration of Jesus. Jesus was not far away from those terrible final days in Jerusalem, and we can see, in those small coins that the widow gave, a symbol of the few drops of blood that came from his side when pierced by the soldier’s lance. That was a sign that he had given all, a complete offering of Himself to his Father for our sake.

The widow and her ‘widow’s mites’ have been handed down to us in the New Testament over two millennia as an example of self-giving generosity. But it goes further than that. In the words of William Barclay, “we may feel that we have not much in the way of material gifts or personal gifts to give to Christ, but if we put all that we have and are at his disposal, he can do things with it and with us that are beyond our imaginings”.

Justice & Peace

“To Reach Peace – Teach Peace” John Paul II

At this time of year, it is traditional to remember our dead. As a nation, we remember in particular the fallen of both World Wars. Many of us will buy a red poppy from collectors or local shops or public buildings.

It is our custom. It is a very practical way of honouring the dead while helping those who survived terrible conflict. You might also see people wearing a white poppy.

The white poppy also honours the dead, and symbolises the belief that there are better ways to resolve conflicts than killing other people.

It is now 89 years since the end of the “war to end all wars” yet it is clear we still have a long way to go to put an end to a social institution, which in the last decade alone killed over 10 million children.

God of perfect peace,

Violence and cruelty can have no part with you.

May those who are at peace with one another hold fast to the good that unites them; may those who are  enemies forget their hatred and be healed for Peace:

Roman Missal.
